February 8 – Boy Scout Day

Posted on February 8, 2017

The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated on this date in 1910.

It's the largest Scouting organization in the nation -- and one of the largest youth organizations in the nation -- and it is part of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.

Here are some facts and figures about the Boy scouts:

There are more than 2.7 million kids and teens involved in Boy Scouting USA.

Almost 1 million adults volunteer their time to the organization.

Since its founding a little more than a century ago, more than 110 million people have participated in Boy Scouting USA!

With Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Lone Scouting, STEM Scouting, Varsity Scouts, Sea Scouts, Venturing, and Learning for Life, Boy Scouts USA serves folks from age 7 to adults.

More than 2 million men have reached the highest rank of Boy Scouting, Eagle Scout.

There are several High Adventure Bases that offer wilderness programs as varied as canoeing, backpacking, sailing, and other sorts of training. The are located in Minnesota, Ontario and Manitoba (in Canada), New Mexico, Florida, and West Virginia.

By the way...

You may have heard of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts but be wondering what the other programs above are. Here's the rundown:

* Cub Scouts are males from 7 to 11.
* Boy Scouts are males from 11 to 18.
* Lone Scouts are individuals who cannot participate in a troop (usually because of where they live).
* STEM Scouts are boys and girls in elementary through high school; this new program focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math learning and career development.

* Varsity Scouts are Boy Scouts ages 14 to 18; this program includes high adventure and sports opportunities.
* Sea Scouts are males and females from 14 to 21; this program focuses on nautical activities such as sailing.

* Venturers are males and females from 14 to 21.

I'm proud to say...

Times have changed, and Boy Scouts USA has changed with them. Now, women are allowed as volunteers, including as Scoutmasters, and gay and transgender people are allowed as members and volunteers and leadership.

Values and character are demonstrated in this growth -- and that's what Scouting is all about.
