Is today the first Saturday of August?
It
is??? Then...it must be...Today is National Mustard Day!!!
Yeah,
yeah, you've probably never heard of such a thing, but it's a real
holiday being promoted each year by the National Mustard Museum
(which you have probably also never heard of) of Middleton,
Wisconsin.
What
do you do on Mustard Day? The usual: music, games, entertainment,
food. In this case, food is key – there are hot dogs and brats to
eat with a variety of mustards. Mustard tasting (or sampling) isn't
something I've ever heard of before...
...But
on Mustard Day, it's a thing!
I'm not sure about this Mustard Day activity... Maybe all I should say about this is, "Don't try this at home!" |
Mustard
is a popular condiment (sauce) made from the seeds of one of the
mustard plants. Did you know that there are several mustard plants
used to make this food: white or yellow mustard, brown or Indian
mustard, and black mustard.
What
is done to the seeds varies with the mustard: they are typically
ground, but sometimes they are mixed with other ingredients whole,
cracked, or even just bruised. The seeds are mixed with water, salt,
lemon juice or other liquids, and sometimes flavorings or spices. The
resulting condiment is sometimes one smooth color (typically bright
yellow to dark brown) or a mottled, speckly color.
Here
are just a few of the kinds of mustard people in the U.S. can easily
buy in grocery stores:
Yellow
mustard – classic, sweet, or spicy
Old-style
mustard
Honey
mustard
Super
hot sriracha mustard
Horseradish
mustard
Of
course, there are also many more unusual flavors of mustards,
including beer mustard, apple mustard, or cherry mustard.
Mustard
is often used in sandwiches, including hot dogs and hamburgers. It is
used for dipping sauce, particularly for corn dogs. It is used to
spice up salad dressing or in glazes, sauces, soups, and marinades.
It is popular in many different cuisines, all over the world.
