If
you live in New York or New Jersey, you may be able to temporarily
house people whose homes are uninhabitable (no long livable). With
the cold temperatures setting in, it's even more important that the
thousands whose homes are damaged or without power get help. Families
who need help are urged to go to local disaster sites.
Here
are some more links to help you help those who were hit hard by
Sandy.
Learn
about hurricanes.
The
super-storm Sandy has a name because meteorologists (weather
scientists) name hurricanes as they are born, travel across the
ocean, and grow.
What's
a hurricane? you may ask. Find out at Weather Wiz Kids.
Did you know...?
Scientists
give the first hurricane of the year a name that starts with A, the
second a name that starts with B, and so on, all through the year.
There are six different name lists for Atlantic hurricanes, and they
alternate each year. However, if a particular hurricane does a lot of
damage, that name is retired forever from hurricane name lists, and
it has to be replaced by another name that starts with the same
letter. That means that, from now on, no other tropical storm or
hurricane will be named Sandy.
